More Information About Marquise Cut Diamond Rings
Legend dating back to the 17th Century has it that marquise cut diamonds take their name from when Louis XVI of France - the 'Sun King' - desired a diamond to be polished into the shape of the mouth of the Marquise of Pompadour.
Marquise cut diamonds are elongated in shape and pointed at both ends, and have a total of 56 facets. Natural marquise cut diamond rings are most often suitable for long, slender fingers, as the diamonds typically run vertically along the finger, and this shape of diamond maximises carat weight and can, therefore, provide you with a much larger looking diamond.
The vast majority of marquise cut diamonds will exhibit a 'bow-tie' effect which is a black shadow-type effect inside the diamonds. This is a natural occurring phenomenon which is simply due to the shape of these diamonds. In essence, the better the cut of the diamond, the less apparent the bow-tie effect becomes. Marquise cut diamond rings typically have V-shaped claws at each end, where the points of marquise cut diamonds nestle. Claws on either side of the settings of solitaire marquise cut diamond rings can also provide added security for the diamonds.
