Size vs Quality?
Posted By Richard Preece

Every girl wants a "big rock" on her finger. However, should you sacrifice quality in order to achieve this?

Diamonds are classified according to the international diamond grading system of the 4Cs - cut, carat, colour and clarity.

On a recent visit to Los Angeles, I was approached by a very excited diamond merchant who want to show me a 10 carat brilliant round cut diamond. Being as it's not every day that you get to see a 10 carat diamond, I was interested in seeing his diamond. Whilst it was F in colour (so a lovely white diamond), the clarity grade was poor - so much so that, if I was to liken it to something, it looked like someone had ground pepper all over it. The inclusions in the diamond were plentiful and obvious. As a result, yes it was a diamond, but it was very unattractive. This is a good example, albeit exaggerated, of size over quality.

The beauty of diamonds is their sparkle. To achieve this, you want to be looking for well balanced diamonds in terms of their carat, cut, colour and clarity. For example, it wouldn't necessarily be advisable to choose a diamond with colour J and clarity IF, as these represent opposite ends of the spectrum - yes, you would have an internally flawless diamond, but the J colour diamond means that it would have a slight yellow tint to it. You would be better advised to select a diamond which is higher in colour and lower in clarity, representing a more balanced diamond, such as an F/VS1 diamond for example. A diamond of F/VS1 quality which is well cut and proportioned, will provide you with superb sparkle and will look stunning on the finger.

In terms of the actual carat size of the diamond in the first place, much depends upon individual preference. Some ladies prefer larger diamonds to others. So, firstly ascertain what SIZE of diamond you want, and then play around with the DeJoria interactive diamond search to ascertain the best COMBINATION of colour and clarity you can get for your money.

In summary, therefore, size isn't everything - our recommendation is to choose a well balanced and well cut diamond.....this will provide you with maximum sparkle which we're sure is your ultimate objective.
